Ah, Melbourne Cup day! Truly an awesome day of the racing calendar. We would not normally select this race as one to bet on nor one to comment on, but it is the Melbourne Cup, and you couldn’t be a racing enthusiast without having a go, despite there being lots of easier races to make money on.
We have been on 3 runners from the start and got a lot longer odds then compared to what’s being offered now! We do this every year purely to see how good our judgement is. One of the data team excels in long range work while the other is more what’s happening now. When they agree as they did on these selections then we know we will go close.
We are already on Surprise Baby, Steel Prince and Oceanex, but recent form, which we didn’t have the benefit of when we bet means we would add a couple more in.
We have left a few favoured ones out as we think the heat and weight and firm track wont suit. They might still win. It is the Cup after all, but we are happy with what we have.
13 SURPRISE BABY (One unit)
16 STEEL PRINCE (Half unit unit)
22 OCEANEX (Half unit)
12 PRINCE OF ARRAN (Half unit)
7 VERRY ELLEEGANT (Half unit)
21 TIGER MOTH (Half unit)
Surprise Baby. We love the approach Pruesker is taking with this exciting stayer. He mapped this out last year saying it is exceptionally clean winded and with the weight it got he would pick the races to avoid rehandicap. We think he is an out of the box trainer and we love the horses effort last year. If it runs the same will go awfully close.
Steel Prince has been on our radar for 2 years. Ideal Cup horse, this one. Really pleased with all of its runs and has been using its lead ups to avoid penalties and walking the tightrope of qualifying. Couldn’t be happier. As a 34 percent win average! If it wins you will hear us from wherever you are!
Oceanex is a little like Steel Prince. Gets in noticeably light. Recent form to our eye has just been fitness runs. The qualifying race for the Cup, the Andrew Rumsden, was a very good effort and a repeat sees her right in this.
Prince of Arran needs no introduction, and his recent form is good enough to suggest he will be as competitive as ever. Plus, we love Jamie Khah. One of the absolute best in the business and will give the Prince every chance.
Verry Ellegant has the best form by miles this spring. Absolutely top class and looked like she put to bed the wet track only with her run in the Turnbull. Right in this.
Tiger Moth is fascinating. We think it is exciting having watched its English starts. They may be bringing over as an education because it looks good enough to be a globetrotting horse. Only 4 career starts is a worry for us. Looks like one that wins by panels and you go WOW! Or will be allowed to run an excellent fifth with next year written all over it.
