Golf - 2019 Masters

MASTERS week is the biggest week in the Golfing calendar, and one of the biggest weeks in sports in general. I’m not going to talk myself up by saying that I excel at betting on golf – in fact I rarely bet outside of the 4 majors every year so I wouldn’t be going out of your way too much to be tailing me this weekend, but due to the magnitude of the event, I felt like breaking down some of the players’ chances of wearing the green jacket come Sunday.

None of these bets will be considered official and will not contribute to our official record (for better or for worse). What we will do though is attempt to maximise our profits starting with $100 – just for a bit of fun and a measuring point. Here goes nothing… good luck if you are following!

Rory McIlory - $8 @ Bet365

Best Masters – 4th (2015)

Recent Masters form (most recent listed first): T5, T7, T10, 4, T8

Form: Rory is in magnificent form, finishing in the top 10 in each of his 7 events to start the year, including winning the Players Championship, 2nd in the WGC-Mexico Championship – two huge events. This could very well be the year he takes home the illusive jacket.

Dustin Johnson – $13 @ Sportsbet

Best Masters – T4 (2016)

Recent Masters form: T10, T4, T6

Form: DJ would be very happy with his form this year, with 5 top 10 finishes from his 8 events including winning the WGC-Mexico Championship. Expect a high finish.

Justin Rose - $15 @ Bet365

Best Masters – 2nd (2017)

Recent Masters form: T12, 2nd, T10, T2, T14. Rose has never finished outside the top 40 in his 13 Masters performances.

Form: Rose has made a top 10 in 5 of his last 7 events, including winning the Farmers Insurance Open in January. Big time player who regularly performs in majors.

Jon Rahm - $19 @ Multiple Books

Best Masters – 4th (2018). T27th in his only other Masters performance

Form: Rahm is in pleasing form without setting the world on fire, with 6 top 10’s and 9 top 25’s from his last 10 events. One of the biggest hitters in the game, Rahm thrived on the Par-5’s in last year’s Masters going 11 under on these holes alone. If he tidies up the rest of his game this week, he could easily be a winner at just 24 years of age.

Brooks Koepka - $26 @ Multiple Books

Best Masters – T11 (2017)

Recent Masters form: T11, T21, T33

Form: Brooks isn’t in the best of form in 2019, missing one cut and only reaching the top 20 once in his 6 events so far this year. But it is comforting to know that tour form doesn’t translate into majors form for Koepka, as he’s turned into one of the most reliable major player in the world. In Koepka’s last 13 majors, he had 3 wins, and 12 top 25 places. Course suits.

Hideki Matsuyama - $31 @ BetEasy

Best Masters – 5th (2015)

Recent Masters form: 19th, T11, T7, 5th

Form: Matsuyama is one of the most honest and consistent players on tour, and it shows this season by making each of his 10 cuts including 7 top 25 finishes. I doubt he can win this weekend, but I can definitely see him in the last few pairings on Sunday. That’s just the kind of player Matsuyama is.

Paul Casey - $32 @ Betfair

Best Masters – T4 (2016)

Recent Masters form: T15, 6th, T4, T6

Form: A lot of people who will watch the Masters may not even know who Paul Casey is, nor recognise him if they bumped into him down the street, but he is one of the most consistent Masters performers for over 15 years. In his 12 Masters appearances, Case has had 5 top 10 finishes and 8 top 20’s. He’s in great form this season also, in his 11 events, he’s had 9 top 25 finishes, including a 1st, a 2nd, and a 3rd. Could surprise.

Charley Hoffman - $101 @ Multiple books

Best Masters – T9 (2015)

Recent Masters form: T12, T22, T29, T9

Form: Hoffman has made the top 30 in each of his last 4 Masters appearances. The only others to do so? Casey, Matsuyama, Day, Spieth, Rose and McIlory, that’s some serious company! Hoffman hasn’t had a great season so far, missing as many cuts as he’s made, but I find great solace that he’s finished in 2nd and 18th in his last 2 events. Won’t win, but warrants respect.
